“Tainan Higher Industrial School” was established in 1931 in the Houjia area. At that time, there were a sports field and a baseball field (now the Main Library and Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering, respectively) on either side of Engineering Avenue. This location is a focus of the university’s campus greenification project. It is lined by tall “rain trees,” a longtime campus sight, and blackboard trees, lemon-scented gums, Taiwan persimmon trees, and mahogany trees have also been planted on both sides. The trees are lofty and concentrated, enhancing the avenue’s linearity and directionality. The avenue connects important scenic spots, including Ge Chi Hall, NCKU Museum, Youyou Lake, and Mengmeng Lake.
1931年在後甲地區成立之「臺灣總督府臺南高等工業學校」，當時校內工學大道兩旁原有運動場及野球場（現分別為總圖書館及水利系館）。今此地是校園綠化重點區域，聳立著本校老樹「雨豆樹」，道路兩旁亦種植黑板樹、檸檬桉、毛柿及桃花心木，樹形高聳密集，增強道路的軸線性與方向性，又連接格致堂、成大博物館與悠悠湖、夢夢湖等重要景點。
